130-meter pure methanol powered chuanjiang standard bulk carrier set to build

On June 18, Zhijiang Shengmao Shipyard kicked off the construction of the first 130-meter pure methanol powered Chuanjiang standard bulk carrier on the Changjiang River, marking another milestone breakthrough for Shanghai Changjiang Shipping in leading the way to build the first large-scale clean fleet on the Changjiang River.

It is reported that Shanghai Changjiang Shipping fully implements China’s policy of comprehensively promoting the development of the Changjiang River Economic Belt and vigorously promotes the construction and development of LNG-powered vessels on the Changjiang River. Based on this, Shanghai Changjiang Shipping continues to be an early adopter in other pilot demonstration work of clean energy power for vessels, and tries its best to promote the green and high-quality development of Changjiang River shipping, one of which is the construction project of 130-meter methanol-powered chuanjiang standard bulk carriers.

The 130-meter methanol powered Chuanjiang Standard bulk carrier construction project is a high-tech power vessel demonstration research project of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and a project of the MIIT for the application of methanol-fueled medium-speed engines with a cylinder diameter of 210mm. Shanghai Changjiang Shipping took the initiative to undertake the research of real-vessel application.

The bulk carrier adopts China’s first cylinder direct injection of marine methanol fuel medium speed engine, which is the first methanol-fueled power vessel for China Yangtze Shipping Group, and can achieve the highest methanol substitution rate of 95%.

Compared with conventional diesel-powered vessels, it can reduce NOx emissions by 60% and SOx emissions by up to 99%. The bulk carrier will also verify the corresponding capability of the methanol-powered vessel in the fast-flowing sections of the inland river, and it is expected that the fuel replacement rate of 90% can also be reached in the fast-flowing sections.
