GWS Completes Conversion Project for Asia’s Largest Offshore Barge

On June 15, Asia’s first and the world’s third largest offshore engineering barge “Haiyang Shiyou 229” successfully completed the fourth phase of the conversion project in Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard (GWS), a subsidiary of Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI), under China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).

The conversion of “Haiyang Shiyou 229” is mainly includes dismantling of 2,200 tons of floating tanks, installation of fender rubbers, installation and commissioning of winch system as well as adding new ballast water management system (BWMS)and etc.

The difficulty of the project mainly lies in the lifting and transferring of a large number of large equipments and components. GWS overcame the difficulties of tight use of berths, sites and large equipments, and completed all the conversion works on schedule, which was highly praised by the shipowner.

After conversion, “Haiyang Shiyou 229” will be put into Xijiang 30-2DPPB block floating operation, to help the stable production of oilfields in the eastern part of the South China Sea and energy green low-carbon transformation to speed up, and “refueling” for the economic and social development of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Area.

In addition, in order to complete offshore construction projects such as loading and transportation of ultra-deepwater deepwater jackets for key projects of oil and gas development in the South China Sea, such as Lufeng 15-1, Lufeng 12-3, Liuhua 11-1, GWS carried out third phase adaptive capacity modification for the “Haiyang Shiyou 229” from 2021 to 2023. After conversion, “Haiyang Shiyou 229” completed the transportation and launching of “Haiji-1”, “Haiji-2” and other deepwater jackets.
