SDARI’s three main vessels awarded AiP certificates

During the Posidonia 2024 maritime event held in Athens, the methanol dual-fuel powered 64,500 DWT bulk carrier GREEN DOLPHIN 64 Dolphin series, the ammonia dual-fuel powered 8,200 TEU container ship GREEN SEALION 8200 series, and the hydrogen-fuel powered 114,000 DWT Aframax oil tanker GREEN WHALE OT series, which were newly developed by the Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute (SDARI) of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), attracted a lot of attention. These vessels have laid a solid foundation for market promotion and future orders, and at the same time contributed to the “China Solution” for global green shipping.

At the exhibition, the methanol dual-fuel powered 64,500 DWT bulk carrier received an Approval-in-Principle (AiP) certificate from Lloyd’s Register (LR).

It is a green and low-carbon bulk carrier complying with the latest international conventions, which is carefully developed on the basis of the second-generation 64,000 DWT bulk carrier, focusing on the requirements of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Ship Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase III, Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), and Carbon Tax, and focusing on the concepts of carbon reduction and digital design.

Adopting a wave-reducing and drag-enhancing bow, a wind-resistant stern and a low-wind-resistance superstructure, this bulk carrier will significantly reduce fuel consumption, effectively improve the wave resistance and maneuverability under different sea conditions, and enhance the economy; it has been optimized based on the Common Structural Requirements for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers (CSR-H), which ensures a larger deadweight and cargo hold volume, and improves cargo suitability; Also, it is equipped with the digital operation support system DOSS®, which features intelligent navigation, intelligent cabin and intelligent energy efficiency management, making it operation more in line with the needs of the era of safety, environmental protection and economy.

The ammonia dual-fuel powered 8,200 TEU container ship, which was awarded the AiP certificate by LR, was jointly developed by SDARI, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), LR and MAN Group.

The container ship adopts the low-wave drag-boosting “S-BOW” straight bowline developed by SDARI, together with energy-saving devices such as twisted suspension rudders, energy-saving conduits and windshields, to take into account the speed and fuel consumption under different operating conditions; Taking into account various sizes and types of container loading combinations, it can carry standard 20-foot containers and 1,300 coolers; It is also equipped with ammonia-fueled engines and storage tanks, which have been designed in an innovative way to minimize the impact of ammonia leaks on the crew, while ensuring that the ammonia fuel refueling, storage and supply system is safe and reliable, and has passed a safety risk assessment.

The hydrogen fuel-powered reserved Aframax tanker, which was awarded the AiP certificate by the RINA, was jointly developed by SDARI, Greek owner TMS Group, RINA and Wärtsilä.

The Aframax tanker is equipped with two liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel medium-speed engines, which meet the NOx Stage III emission requirements in both oil and gas modes, and the main engine is capable of mixing natural gas and hydrogen; The cargo pumps are motor-driven and equipped with high-voltage shore power, waste heat recovery and economic and reliable power distribution system.

In addition, taking into full consideration of equipment space, power station configuration and structural strength, it makes provision for future hydrogen reforming on board and carbon dioxide capture in the process of hydrogen production, as well as storage of carbon dioxide in liquid form, and if necessary, hydrogen fuel cells can be used as a power source when sailing and staying in port.
