7 injured in explosion at Osaka shipyard

Seven male workers were injured Thursday after an explosion at a shipyard in Osaka, the local police and fire department said according to KYODO NEWS.

All seven, in their teens to 30s, are conscious, the police said. While the cause of the explosion is still unknown, welding and cleaning work involving kerosene had been taking place in the dock at the time, according to the police.

Firefighters received a call at around 2:45 p.m. reporting that a vessel exploded and left some people injured at the shipyard in Nishinari Ward.

The kerosene was being used to clean the vessel’s engine, the police said.

A fire caused by the explosion was extinguished over two hours later, but a part of the ship that included the engine was destroyed.
