Safe Bulkers orders a kamsarmax bulk carrier in Japan

Greek shipping company Safe Bulkers, headed by Polys Hajioannou, has ordered an 82,000 dwt Kamsarmax bulk carrier from an unnamed Japanese shipyard for delivery in the first quarter of 2027.

This new shipbuilding is a sister vessel to several of Safe Bulkers’ newbuildings and has been designed to meet the requirements of Phase III of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in relation to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, as well as to comply with the latest nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission regulations.

Including the latest order, Safe Bulkers currently has nine newbuildings ordered, of which two are methanol dual-fuel powered, with 1 unit, 2 units, 4 units and 2 units scheduled for delivery in 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027 respectively.

So far this year, Safe Bulkers has ordered three 82,000 dwt Kamsarmax bulk carriers from Japanese shipyards, but none of the shipyard information and the cost have been disclosed, and the other two were ordered in January and late April this year.

Safe Bulkers is currently in the process of placing new vessel orders in line with the company’s fleet renewal strategy to address the ever-locking CO2 emissions regulations to build a young, efficient fleet and become a resilient company.

Safe Bulkers is understood to be an international provider of offshore dry bulk transportation services with a fleet of 46 vessels, including 11 Panamax, 9 Kamsarmax, 18 Super Panamax and 8 Cape of Good Hope bulk carriers.
