Yangzijiang Shipbuilding’s Handheld Orders Reach 193 Vessels, Valued at US$16 Billion

On May 27, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (Holdings) Co., Ltd. (Yangzijiang Shipbuilding) released the “Announcement of Business Update for the First Quarter of FY2024”.

As of May 24, 2024, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding’s order book amounted to 7.45 million compensated gross tonnages (CGTs) (193 vessels), with a new record order value of US$16.08 billion, with delivery schedules up to 2028, compared to US$14.48 billion as of the end of December 2023. The value of new vessel orders taken so far this year is US$3.32 billion, achieving about 74% of the annual order-taking target.

As disclosed in the announcement, as of May 24, 2024, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has a cumulative order book of 193 vessels valued at US$16.08 billion, covering a wide range of vessel types such as containerships, bulk carriers, gas carriers and oil tankers, etc., as detailed below:

Container ship hand-held orders amounted to 4.27 million CGTs (66 vessels) valued at US$9.28 billion, including ten 24,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel powered containerships, twelve 16,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel powered containerships, four 8,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel powered containerships, nine 7,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel powered containerships, six 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel powered containerships, six 9,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel powered containerships, three 950 TEU methanol dual-fuel powered containerships as well as four 16,000 TEU containerships, ten 8,000 TEU containerships and two 4,600 TEU containerships.

Hand-held orders for bulk carriers amounted to 940,000 CGTs (47 vessels) valued at US$1.88 billion, including four 32,000 dwt bulk carriers, five 40,000 dwt bulk carriers, two 45,000 dwt bulk carriers, nine 66,000 dwt bulk carriers, five 80,000 dwt bulk carriers, nineteen 82,500 dwt bulk carriers and three Combination 83,300 dwt bulk carriers.

Hand-held orders for LNG/LPG/LEG/VLEC carriers amounted to 600,000 CGTs (22 vessels) valued at US$2.09 billion, including two 175,000 m3 LNG carriers, three 100,000 m3 VLECs, two 48,000 m3 LPG carriers, nine 40,000m3 LPG carriers, three 36,000 m3 LEG carriers, and three 25,000 m3 LPG carriers;

Hand-held orders for tankers amounted to 1.64 million CGTs (58 vessels) valued at US$2.83 billion, including thirty-one 50,000 dwt MR product tankers, twenty-two 75,000 dwt LR1 product tankers, and five 114,000 dwt LR2 product tankers.

According to the announcement, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has undertaken a total of 38 new vessels so far this year, including fourteen 75,000 dwt LR1 product tankers; three 25,000 m3 LPG carriers, two 48,000 m3 LPG carriers and three 100,000 m3 VLECs; four 82,500 dwt bulk carriers; six 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel-powered containerships and six 8000TEU containerships.

As of this year, the most high-profile new ship order of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding is the contract of 3 VLECs signed with SP Chemicals, a Singaporean shipping company. This is not only the first time for SP Chemicals to place an order for VLECs as a shipowner, but also the first VLEC order undertaken by a Chinese shipyard this year, and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has also become the first private shipyard in China to enter the VLEC construction market.

Since the beginning of this year, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has completed and delivered a total of 28 new vessels, achieving about 44% of the annual delivery target, including 18 containerships, 9 bulk carriers and 1 gas carrier.

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding is a large enterprise group with shipbuilding and Marine engineering manufacturing as its main business, shipping leasing, trade logistics and real estate as its supplement. The company’s history can be traced back to 1956. It started as a shipbuilding cooperative. After a series of development, such as factory relocation in 1975, stock restructuring in 1999, construction of a new plant across the river in 2005 and listing in 2007, it is now the first Chinese Shipbuilding enterprise listed in Singapore.

At present, the total assets of the group exceed 70 billion yuan, covering an area of more than 5 million square meters, with more than 7,000 meters of wharf shoreline . The company has three giant dry docks and three large and medium-sized slipways, with an annual shipbuilding production capacity of 6 million DWT.
